>From what I could tell, the issues are the same I have found with a number
of programs, both for Dos as well as Windows - internal max limits used in
calculating how much ram is found on the system.
A number of older Dos programs I used to be able to use, when I had much
smaller amounts of ram on my system, no longer will work when I installed
xxx Megs of ram - the xxx varied depending on the program. Common values
all seemed to be multiples of 64 Meg - 64, 128, 256, and so forth. For
example, a program I used to be able to use which would let you examine
memory "on the fly" to find values existing in memory at various time and
values worked absolutely great UNTIL I decided to install more than 256
Megs of ram - then the internal calculations of the program itself to find
how much ram you had on the system, which assumed that no one was ever
going to have a system with greater than 256 Megs of ram (you need to
remember many of these programs were written when most system had no more
than 64 Megs of ram due to the extremely high price of ram in those days),
when it calculated how much ram was on the system, ended up finding a
negative amount of ram, told me as much, and refused to work, since I did
not have enough ram for the program to work in. Other Dos programs, as well
as Windows programs, apparently had similar internal calculations done,
since they would have the same problems, depending on the max ram check
used.
With regard to Win98 itself, apparently the max ram calculation was set by
the developers of Win98 at 512 Megs for some reason - I had just increased
the ram on my system to 768 Megs, rebooted, and when I tried to open a Dos
window, I got the wonderful message that I did not have enough ram on my
system available to open a dos session, and to close some applications.
Since I had gone from 256 Megs to 768, this was, to say the least, a rather
wrong situation is find existing. Unfortunately, I had the same type of
problem/message when I tried to run other programs/sessions as well -
during the course that evening of talking to a friend of mine, and telling
him what I had experienced, he mentioned that he thought he had remembered
that there was this 512 Meg ceiliing with regard to Win98. Sure enough -
when I cut back my system ram to 512, I had absolutely NO problem with
Win98 running totally as expected.
The problem may actually involve issues surrounding Dos, rather than Win98
itself, since Dos is still the base of Win98's workings. I personally dont
know where the problem exists, but I know that if you are using Win98, the
max amount of ram you can have installed on the system is 512 Megs.

Interesting....I use 512mb now for win98, and actually
thought about going higher. What kind of odd behavior did
you notice?

disappeared.
Seems each version of Windows has increased the amount of ram
that the
system can use and handle, but with regard to 98, it seems to
be a limit of
512 Megs.
