Roger, If your current system and programs doesn't support XP, but
works with your current OS, I don't understand your problem, and why
you are worried about 2003.
Are you concerned that you may decide to upgrade your current programs next
2003 and they won't work with your old OS?
It would appear that this would then be the opportune time for one to opt
for
a newer OS. I am using Office 2000 Pro and Money 2000 with my WinXP and
there's no conflict or problems. I don't intend to upgrade to either
OfficeXP, or
Money 2002, and I see no reason that 2003 will change anything that will
affect the
compatibility of my current Office2000 and WindowsXP programs.
Several of these M$ upgrades, such as language versions are not necessary
for me,
and I don't install them, along with some of their unnecessary so called
security fixes.
I have read some posts here that the M$ upgrades messed up their system.
So if my system is working perfectly, so let it be.
I have also noted post here about WinME, being a problem for some. I have a
dual boot on
one of my systems with both WinME and WinXP. My ME seems to boot faster on
my
AMD XP 2000+ than my XP does, however they both work great and NO BSD's.
I did have a problem with Roxio CD Creator 5, when I upgraded to the
Platinum version
on my XP system. . .however, I found the problem was that WinXP isn't
compatible
with Roxio's Take Two Backup program and their FREE upgrade for XP will
remove this
program and then the Platinum version will work.

Peter,
Currently, I am unaffected, but with that announcement you can bet that the
R&D folks are not gonna be doing much work on the Win98SE, or NT
systems. 2003 is only one year away and then the support goes away. You
understand, I am still driving my 1982 automobile and expect support till
it dies. I think about the way the technology keeps changing every year
with a dearth of support. Of course, that is the value of this list (and
others like it) whee we can support each other. But, it is a bit like: if I
want to upgrade to XP, I need to shell out a good bit of $$$ for new
software and hardware because of compatability issues and I am still not
convinced it is worth the inventment.

Perhaps it is not an issue, as you say, but I feel a bit pressured to
upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. It reminds me of "1984" where a good citizen
was not a "good citizen" unless they "buy, buy, buy." Perhaps H.G. Wells
was only off by a couple of decades? :)

Best regards,
Roger Williams
