But, Ed. You are missing the point. Those of us who use Excel have no
problem doing exactly what you say....in Excel, if you format a cell as
text BEFORE you put 25E5 into it, it works just like you say in Star
Office. So, what's the difference?

It is only Jeff who can't make this work on his installation of Excel.
It is NOT Excel in general that won't do this.

Jeff, you mention Star Program and it being a large program. I don't
find
Star Office 6.0 large, and I have checked their spreadsheet using mixed
characters and it works. I first had to format the cells as TEXT and
save.
Then when I recalled the saved program and entered a value such as
25E5, it retained this value and didn't convert to a numeral, but one
must first "Format the cells as TEXT" and save, then it works
There's a few things that are a bit different to MS OFFICE2000, which I
have used since it came out in 99, upgrading from Office97, but like
you,
I'm SICK of Microsoft, period and their tenacious WMA actions have
me looking for perhaps Heaven forbid, didn't think I'd ever do it, but
Apple/MAC might be my choice in the near future. . time will tell.

PS I have the Star Office $75 version
