Howdy...

The files are...

BOOTSECT.DOS
NTLDR
NTDETECT.COM
BOOT.INI

Now the ONE file that you CANNOT direct access is the actual bootstrap
loader. The BOOTSECT.DOS is a copy of the one used by Windows 95/98/Me.
The bootstrap loader is located on cylinder 0, side 0, sector 0, track 0, if
you wish to dump the 512 bytes at this location.

Assuming that you let WinXP set up the dual boot, you can do it but .. there
are at least two files on your Win98 partition that control your dual boot
that you will loose when you reformat, boot.ini, ntloader and there may be a
third that I've forgotten at the moment. I don't have a dual boot system
anymore to check it. They are all on the root of your C drive. You may be
able to figure out what they are. You could try saving those files and then
replacing them after you reinstall Win98 since you aren't changing anything,
merely reinstalling Win98.
