It would probably be cheaper to just buy a new HS & fan since
places are probably going to charge more, or maybe the same
for the fan. However, if you're new to this it may be
"cheaper" for you (by being less trouble) to just replace the
fan since some of these slot 1 HS/fan combo's can be a real
pain to remove the clips, there's a 'technique' to it. Again
however...if you have 3 fans on the heatsink, then they are
all 3 spliced into each other to form one connector, OR, you
have 3 separate leads (one for each fan). If the latter, this
would be easy. If the former, you'd have to do some wire
splicing.

If you end up replacing the whole thing, you MUST put a gob of
thermal putty (heat sink compound) between the CPU and
heatsink.

If you get a fan, or HS/fan combo from elsewhere (out of
state), the shipping is probably going to end up costing you
more than your local store's price, even though they are
probably more expensive. So, I think your best bet and
*easiest* thing for you is to get the combo from them, and
just replace the fan. Note though, that since you have THREE
2" fans on that heatsink (if this is the case) and two are
still working, you don't even need to replace the bad one.
Most of these PII HS & fan units only had one fan on them. 2
would be sufficient...unless your heatsink is very thin. If
it's 1.5 - 2" thick, two fans would be fine.

I have a Pentium II 333 MHz computer that was built in April
1998. The CPU fan started making noise and I wanted to
replace it myself and along the way learn a little about the
machine.

The CPU has three heat sinks on it with a fan on the middle
one. The fan is held onto the heat sink with four screws,
one in each corner. The fan is about two inches square and
it plugs into the mother board with a small connector.

I removed the fan by removing the screws and took the fan to
a local computer store. The man at the store told me that
they did not sell the fans alone but I had to buy the fan
mounted on a heat sink. It looks like replacing the heat
sink would be quite a job.

Can anyone give me a quick course on this subject or point me
to a website where I can learn more?

When I learn this I will then try replacing the power supply
fan.

Thank you,

Tom Dimeo
