I have been changing things around in my computers and getting
into all sorts of problems. I have a new 40 GB hard drive and
a 133 Mh pentium CPU on an old mainboard.
My bios will not control drives larger than 2.1 Gb and
anything over 2.1 Gb has to use FAT32 which I really do not want to use.
So I accepted the Western Digital software setup program that turned
my drive into 19 2,1 Gb drives. My CDRom is drive V.
It took me four starts before the win98 installation was finally
completed
and even then System File Checker found some corrupted files that had
to be replaced. The computer is unstable with many freezes. At this point
I do not know what to try to improve the stability. I could try resetting
values in the CMOS or I could remove the added boards. I have a
modem and a sound board plus, of course, the mouse.

As you know, I recently revised my secondary
computer by installing a 40 Gb hard drive (divided into
19 2 Gb drives) and putting windows 98 on it. I have had
nothing but trouble getting the computer to boot, and
when it does boot it locked up at the drop of a hat.
I finally had enough. I went into my CMOS
programming determined to cause mayhem. When I
got to the part where there was a choice to use the
memory area from C000 to DFFF in various size
blocks for mirroring the ROMs on installed boards
or letting the area be used as general memory, I
changed the values. They were "disabled" which
permitted the block to be used as memory by
programs. If a ROM on an installed board decided
to use it also, I reasoned there would be a conflict.
Actually I was hoping that was what was happening.
I switched all the blocks to "Mirrored" which prevents
programs from using these blocks. I do not have that
many boards installed, but I wanted to make a major
change in the CMOS. The change worked. I have
not had any problem booting, which was the most
annoying. I have not run enough programs to say
that I have solved the problem of locking up, but so
far the operation has been fine.
