The software firewall will protect from outgoing such as spyware. The router firewall is only one way (inbound). I have a router with the firewall and after installing Zone Alarm (free version) had several hits which were stopped by the software. As such, I have maintained both and been able to control anything outbound as well as catching a few inbounds that slip past the router. Its usually only a hit or few per day, but all it takes is one.
It does make setting up the network a bit more involved as you need to clear the ip of each machine for them to talk. If you have XP, you DO need to deactivate its firewall when using the router.
