Helene if what you're asking is how to wipe the old HD, before you possible sell the old PC or give it to someone; a couple of formats is usually ok. However I would use that BCwipe program to delete certain personal things on the PC, then format it.
The battery is just for the BIOS and removing it is the same as the 'clear CMOS' jumper. All that does it reset the BIOS back to default.
