Helene I never saw the original post on this, and it's not in the archives. "Cindy's" post is also edited so I'm not sure what this is *exactly* about. Going on the assumption you want to know about OE's email blocking feature: It's basically useless. Not only does it not work, (or maybe work a few small %'age of the time), but as Jeff mentioned it's useless since the overwhelming majority of parasites that send SPAM use fake email addresses in the "return path". You can still report these to their ISP though (by the full message headers) and get them terminated (unless of course they are with RoadRunner, Comcast, Verio, Verizon, Cogentco, VDI, et al of which in those cases will give the spammer a reward of some kind for harassing people). As far as overseas ISP's, they are even WORSE at supporting scams and harassment.
The only thing I've ever seen OE's "Message rules" work for it sorting to specific folders or folders you created. I've posted to this list several times regarding that problem of message rules other than folder routing not working, and no one has an answer. It doesn't even work for attachments. I tried to delete all of specific attachments and they still came to the inbox. Also, like Steve said in his post, there's really no such thing as sites that ask for your address keeping your address private. They all lie about it. If, or should I say, WHEN you get on one without your permission, unsubscribing is the worse thing you can do. This only verifies to the scum they have yet another valid email address they can attack even more, and sell/give to other scum. All of these anti-spyware programs have nothing to do with receiving or not receiving email. The only way you reduce the number of UCE's you receive is to have a domain name on a host that uses Cpanel Spam filters, or have to pay for a service that does the same thing if you don't have a domain name. You can get a domain name for only $7.95 or so yearly, get it hosted for less than $4 a month with a minimal "CPanel" hosting package, so that is actually the best method. This is NOT that ridiculous "SPAM Assassin" or the like that doesn't block ANYTHING (you still get the cr*p in your inbox or "special folder"!), these are USER CONFIGURABLE filters you add yourself that totally blackholes any email that fits a filter's parameter. You never have to see them or mess with them. With this Cpanel email blocking software, you can block anything anywhere; words or phrases, or numbers in the message body, subject line, or headers. You can even block IP addresses in the headers. As to how they work exactly, I don't think that's a good idea to get into a discussion about this on list.
