I am using a Canon i860 for just that reason. It has individual tanks for 3 colors plus 2 black. I have already refilled the three colors and they worked just fine. The photo colors are almost as good as an Epson that I compared with in the store. (Course, they used super paper on the Epson and just good glossy photo paper on the Canon which makes a big difference.). I had an old Epson that I really liked and found that I could get better photos from a third party ink than the ink that was specified for that printer. I also had a Lexmark and couldn't afford the ink, even with refilling. It was like a funnel that you just coupled the bottle of ink to and turn it on.

I chose the i860 for a compromise between cost and performance. I feel that the performance by far exceeded what I was expecting. Its fast, good photos and has the aux. fitting to directly handle 4x6 paper.

Can anyone suggest a decent printer that does NOT use cartridges with built in
circuits, sensors, etc?
I have an Epson and a Brother(at the shop) and both use some type of device on the
cartridge that prevents
me from using the printer, even though I can plainly see plenty of ink in the Brother
cartridges.
Thank you.
