I will comment that in general, I fully agree, HOWEVER, I have a Compaq
desktop running Win98SE, that was a blazing machine when I bought it about
1-1-2000. Shortly after that, M$ did some updates (which I accepted) which
had a disastrous effect on the computer. I did a reformat and started over,
being slow and selective about which updates I accepted. Windows Media
Player updates would automatically lock up the computer, and once I
identified that, I was able to uninstall and live with the thing. Over the
years I have tried several times to update the Media Player, and the result
is always the same.

Not a "I heard such and such", this specifically happened to me, to my
specific computer, and I still have and use it sometimes.
