When you receive a PDF meant for printing ... is there a way to see if it is in "press quality" / high resolution / CMYK or RGB etc?

Sure, that process is called "Preflighting".

You can either use the Preflighter built into Acrobat 6, or purchase a 3rd party tool such as PitStop, etc.

I have the full Acrobat 4 on a Macintosh. If you need more info to answer, please ask.

Easiest thing, which is a good idea in general, would be to upgrade to Acrobat 6 Professional. (assuming you are running Mac OS X - which if you aren't, you should!)
