Leonard: Thanks for that. I can now stop stripping down my PDFs looking for bugs. :-)

All: Anyone have any particular instances of this problem ie anecdotal evidence that I can use to point out where, exactly, the problem lies? Specific software packages, RIPs or prepress suggestions would be good so that I can take this issue back to them on a technical footing.

Am I missing something here or are these prepress areas using non-standard prepress gear (QuickCut is a name that has been mentioned before) and dumping the implementation overheads back to me in the form of extra labour?

The latter! The fault is theirs and they are looking to blame you...
