I missed the last sentence of Catherine's post, although I still think the issues may be related to how Quark masks the images. Printers have many different kinds of rips, and many may be outdated, or unable to handle complex files. I'd send the printer a test file (based on my previous instructions), and see if it has any problems with the file. If it fails, the printer needs to address its PDF workflow, and until such problems with PDFs are resolved, you will either have to send native files, or find another printer. If you check your files being PDF/X-1a or 3 (Spot and 4C only) compliant and if it is just one printer that can not work with these PDF's, I would think that this printer does not know how to deal with PDF files.
