Hello Jon,
I'm pretty sure my PDFs used the default Press settings, which leave Preserve Halftone Screen deselected. But I will certainly check because there seem to be a lot of variables that can cause problems. Sounds as if I need my own copy of Pitstop Pro as well.
Thanks,
Catherine Osborn

Catherine,

Going along with what Richard has stated - OPI can be a major grievance to many Renderers out there - whatever level of postscript.

Removing the OPI comments is always a good action to perform - Enfocus Pitstop is the strongest application to perform this. However, use Pitstop Professional 6.xx or the Server 3.xx. Older versions of Pitstop (in general) did not exmaine the FormsXObject data to the degree that the more recent releases will.

Also backing up Greg - since embedding line screens can affect the quality of output - I for one always ensure my PDF Profiles not only detect OPI and Halftone Screening - but remove then all in one process.

Your query regarding PDF versions has nothing to do with Quark as such. Once the postscript file has been created - you then drop into Distiller. It is then down to you/your settings which PDF version is used. Many printers only want PDF 1.3 files - since these are generally 'in the middle' regarding their pass-rate. However - this is another topic.

Your query regarding line frequency. You must fill in this box in Quark - but it's the Distiller settings that then determine if the frequency is carried forward into the PDF. Ideally, your Distiller/Color/ options should have the 'PReserve Halftone Screen' option DESELECTED. I would query this with your printer.

Hi Greg,
Thank you for yet another potentially useful bit of info. I think I am going to send copies of the various replies I've received on this list to the printer with whom my files have caused problems. I'm still a bit confused, however, because I understood that Quark 4 (which I'm using because I thought, at first, that my copy of Quark Passport 5 might be causing problems) would only make PDFs compatible with level 1.3. Indeed, I read recently that this was still true of Quark 6. Can anyone shed further light? It's an interesting point for future reference.
Thanks again,
Catherine Osborn
PS Curiously, it was the printers who asked me to set the screen frequency in the Quark print dialogue. And the printers I worked with previously at the Sunday World also had precise instructions on setting screen frequency. Normally, I would worry only about the ensuring the correct resolution on my graphics files.

Hi Catherine-

Try taking the screenout your picture files. Imagesetters don't need screens in files. The rip station will put whatever screen is needed in the picture no matter what you do. One of your printers can take the files. Maybe it's the printers fault. Many printers are still working with Postscript level 2 rips and not with Postscript 3. The old rips have problems with the higher level PDFs (1.4) especilly when gradients are involved.
