Catherine, it is Acrobat that determines the PDF level with both Quark 4 and 5, as they work in cohoots with Distiller. Depending upon which version of Acrobat you have, you can choose the compatibility (i.e., 1.3, 1.4 or 1.5) when you select your Distiller job options. Quark 6 (at least on the Mac) uses the PDF library to produce the PDFs, and the it also uses PDF 1.3 (most compatible). The Press default job option in AB 6 is PDF 1.4, which is not as compatible, but which can be easily customized to PDF 1.3.

Gasp, gasp!!

When you print a PostScript file (or PDF) in Quark, you have to select the resolution and screen frequency. 2400 resolution will give you 175 frequency (good for either 150 or 175 dpi film or press resolution). I don't think Greg understood what you meant. You did the right thing with your Quark file, and PDF, except for the OPI settings.

He is right, however, it's best to use PDF 1.3 (AB 4-compatible), unless your printer tells you to use PDF 1.4 cannot be processed without a PS level 3 rip.

Subject: Re: [PDF-Basics] press optimised PDFs fail at imagesetter

Hi Greg,
Thank you for yet another potentially useful bit of info. I think I am going to send copies of the various replies I've received on this list to the printer with whom my files have caused problems. I'm still a bit confused, however, because I understood that Quark 4 (which I'm using because I thought, at first, that my copy of Quark Passport 5 might be causing problems) would only make PDFs compatible with level 1.3. Indeed, I read recently that this was still true of Quark 6. Can anyone shed further light? It's an interesting point for future reference.
Thanks again,
Catherine Osborn
PS Curiously, it was the printers who asked me to set the screen frequency in the Quark print dialogue. And the printers I worked with previously at the Sunday World also had precise instructions on setting screen frequency. Normally, I would worry only about the ensuring the correct resolution on my graphics files.

Hi Catherine-

Try taking the screenout your picture files. Imagesetters don't need screens in files.  The rip station will put whatever screen is needed in the picture no matter what you do.  One of your printers can take the files.  Maybe it's the printers fault.  Many printers are still working with Postscript level 2 rips and not with Postscript 3.  The old rips have problems with the higher level PDFs (1.4) especilly when gradients are involved.
