True, EPS's placed into programs that use the raster-based preview are going to be lame on screen, but Adobe application (and I think Quark) all process the vector data..
This can be tested by taking an Illustrator file with text and making the PDF two ways:
1. Save to PDF. 2. Convert text to paths and save to PDF.
The text will always look better when the characters are left as fonts.
Yes, but that has NOTHING to do with EPS - that's the removal of the font hinting data (and potential loss of anti-aliasing).
