Not only has this problem perplexed our department but it has also sent the client almost running out the door. Sorry for the delay in my response, but I had to carry on with our scheduled workload before trying to replicate the problem. I was finally able do it yesterday and came up with interesting results. First, let me give a background of our workflow. We have a Dell 260 running on Windows 2000 Professional. This is company issued that is similar to the rest of the computers our different departments have. Our ISD loads them up with the Windows Office Tools such as WORD, EXCELL, POWERPOINT, ACCESS, etc. They have also installed Adobe Acrobat 4.0. I installed Acrobat 6.0 Professional and PitStop 6.0 Pro. We output to several digital printer/copier such as Canon ImageRunner400, 600, Canon 1150 & 5000 color copiers, Heidelberg Digimaster 9110. Yesterday, once again, I redistilled the WORD files and came up with a working PDF document. Output to the Heidelberg 9110. The output was fine, no font problem. I duplicated this file several times to apply different conditions to produce the problem. I took one file and I add blank PDF page. We've had this blank PDF 8.5x11 page for a couple of years now. No problem. I, then, converted the color logo that is on several page to become black using PitStop. Output was fine. But then the problem occurred when I change the page order from the thumbnail pane (Page Tab on the left side). The output had letters bunching up, like the first time it happened. Next thing I did was taking a fresh duplicate file and added 3 tabbed pages (Quark 9x11docs converted to PDF) and inserted them in their respective places. Lo and behold, the problem occurred again. I been told by several user groups that having different versions of Acrobat is not good, but we have been chugging along just fine. Page insertion is something we do all the time with different types of documents (RFP, contracts, specs, etc.). We even did a 100 manual recently that was about 1,000+ pages with over 50 tabs. We had to break it up in two sections and marry them together in end. Never had any problems till now. What version of Acrobat are you using? Where did you get the blank page you inserted? What happens if you insert the blank page, and don't change the logo colors? Our yearly budget report came in and as usual, they needed it ASAP. The client created the PDF files. They were placed and retrieved from a network drive along w/ the original WORD files. Routine procedure. Assembled the different sections to create one document (108 page). Output to the Heidelberg 9110 Digimaster only to discover font problems. There were lines where letters bunched up like it lost kerning info. My immediate assumption was a distilling issue (Ariel Bold & Regular not embedded). So I retrieved the original WORD files and distilled one section to test, sent to print and it came out fine. Distilled the rest and reassembled. Did one proof and there were no font problems. Proof called for one blank sheet and color logo to be converted to black. Inserted blank sheet and used PitStop Pro to do the color conversion. Sent out proof again only to discover the same font problem like the first time around. Could the manipulation of the logo using PitStop have corrupted the font information? That is the only thing I did besides the blank page insertion that could have influenced the file in any other way.
