That's fine - IF you do as part of the PDF generation process such that all the Xref offsets are valid. But unless you are fixing up the offsets after prepending the info, you have BROKEN the PDF and should be publicly flogged!


Also, such PDF's can NOT be valid PDF/X or PDF/A files as they both require nothing before the %PDF.


If you really want to experience horror, understand that the alternative in use at some shops is to embed PostScript into the PDFs as PSObjects and to control the device with setpagedevice commands.

Actually, that is PERFECTLY VALID - and is the CORRECT way to do this. That is the whole purpose for PSXObjects - embedding printer-centric info...
