I guess I thought that PDF/A was for archiving - something commercial printers, e.g., financial statement printers, desperately want to do with their print runs. Customers have specifically asked for the ability to print and then archive the same, exact PDF stream - the reason for this is that it is the only way to ensure that a later archival lookup presents exactly the same info as was printed - I guess for legal reasons.

I think this thread has taken a wrong turn. PDF/A is not designed for use in commercial printing. Nor, would I ever expect to find a PDF/A file used in a commercial printing workflow; because, PDF/A is not designed for use in commercial printing. I expect commercial printing will continue to use Postscript, PDF and PDF/X.
