Eventually all I did was to convert my BMP image into a JPEG, and then I read the file in binary format, converted the characters to strings.
Yes, JPEG is the only image format that works with.
HOWEVER, keep in mind that JPEG is a LOSSY algorithm/format designed for PHOTOGRAPHS. Using it on screen shots, textual data, etc. will cause UGLY looking results.
