Warning: My observations and opinions follow :-)

The aim in high end digital still image sensors of late seems to be to produce
devices with a similar photo sensitive area to that of film ie 24 x 36mm.
Obviously the market will be greatest if photographers are provided with a
path to digital imaging that provides legacy and/or true compatibility with
their current equipment (ie expensive lenses).

If a digital capture system is well designed the its colour integrity and
dynamics can be well controlled and may be more stable and provide a wider
latitude than that of conventional silver based film. The advantages are that
colour correction and/or effective film speed may be controlled on a per frame
basis, as may other filtering including custom programs.

The negative issues which seem to be no more than glanced over are those
of power supply dependence (and high power requirements), the cost and
capacity of portable image storage media (of particular interest whilst
traveling), the cost of additional bodies for back-up and convenience (multiple
lenses etc) plus a gamut of other issues which I am sure other listers will
make apparent. And after images are captured there are issues of long term
image storage procedures and integrity.

What I do know from experience is that when I have had the opportunity to
shoot with a high end digital camera more than once I felt ill that I did not
have film and a real camera with me, the one that got away, much like the
feeling when using a disposable film camera to shoot a not-to-be-repeated
event. :-)
