Yup, the meter on the F comes on when you remove the lens cap.  So, if you walk
around with the lens cap off, waiting for "the right shot" to come along, your
batteries drain real fast.  Or even worse, if you forget to put the cap on when
you get home...

And yes, the switch to the left of the lens is for dof only.
