SANE does now support USB and parallel scanners but the reliability of the
drivers varies with scanner models. See:

http://www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners.html for information about
SANE and parallel scanners, or

http://www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners-usb.html for USB models.

It may also be worthwhile looking at VueScan (I'll have to remember about it
when I get a film scanner):

Of course, if the manufacturers wrote Linux drivers we'd have no problems. I
just wish the scanning protocols supported network-transparent scanning, so
I can hook the scanner up to the linux machine and access it from any of my
workstations (like I've done with the printer).

Cheers,
