SANE does now support USB and parallel scanners but the reliability of the
drivers varies with scanner models. See:

Of course, if the manufacturers wrote Linux drivers we'd have no problems. I
just wish the scanning protocols supported network-transparent scanning, so
I can hook the scanner up to the linux machine and access it from any of my
workstations (like I've done with the printer).
