As I said in a previous message you are probably correct.  Just
some kind of tough coating on the metal.

Size is of course relative. I did not have any other camera to
hand so just made an estimation from my feeling.  I have
smallish hands the camera felt perfect in them.  The rep had
large hands.  He swore it felt better with the battery grip.
