since the beginning. that is why for my work, i never shoot print film. i can compare print with slide and see whether the differences (really, the losses) are acceptable or not, and whether some color work needs to be done to correct for the lighting situation and what i wanted to capture. it is the same experience that has led to the dominance of slide film in publication work. even highly trained people can't just look at a color negative every time and tell if the color is going to be right or not without running a test strip. the inconvenience of greatly reduced exposure latitude and higher contrast in slide film is something that the publication industry has decided is the lesser evil.
