I don't think you'll need the fast lens for shooting birds if your eyes are good. I have only one good eye (my left), and I shoot birds with a 400/5.6 Pentax SMC and an A2X-S converter. I do think you'll need more than a 300mm lens unless you're going to bate the birds with food. But you may be better at sneaking up on them than I.
