I think the big difference between computers and digital cameras is that running newer software requires more memory and faster CPU's. With a digital camera there is no new software problem.
I agree that most people don't need the absolute fastest machine available. I'm planning on replacing my 4 Y.O. 350 PII shortly only because it's running out of HD space, I don't think my BIOS will handle a large HD and it will only cost me a few hundred more to get a new machine then to replace my HD et al. I'm looking at something in the 1.8-2.0 ghz range. I think in both computers and digital camera resolution we are getting to a point of it being good enough for the average consumer. I would like to see a bit more support for higher bit depth as well as more cameras writing at 16 bits bit depth. Other then that, 5-6 MP for a P&S replacement camera would be fine IMHO.
