It's not just the first-generation VS1 70-210/3.5 that has that
flange - it is found in several of the other early K-mount VS1
lenses from the 70's. However, it is not difficult to remove it,
and I have done so on a 70-210/3.5 (the 67mm filter threads version
1), on a 24-48/3.8, on a 90-180/4.5 macro, and on two different
35-85/2.8's. As far as I know, the earliest Pentax body that had a
problem with the flange is the LX (where the flange can just graze
the mirror box baffle).
