I agree that the pros opted for Nikon before AF, but it had little to do with the qualit of Nicon screwmount rangefinder lenses. Nikon's success was much more a result of their being ready with a good, durable SLR package at the right time. And then offering the support to sustain it for he pro market. In terms of Leica screw mount lenses, most of the best options are from the Leica stable. For example, no Nikon lens that I'm aware of can match the performance of th 5cm/2.0 Summicron.
