Are all Nikon lenses created equal? No. They make cheap lenses and they make expensive ones. The more expensive ones cost more for a reason. There are a couple of MF Nikkor lenses that haven't changed optical formula over many years (50/1.4 and 105/2.5), but the "mechanicals" have gotten cheaper (or at least the lenses are smaller and lighter). The optics, on the other hand (for lenses that have been revised and updated over the years) have gotten better. If anything, the competition from Canon keeps the pressure on Nikon to maintain their standards.

I don't want to argue (I don't know s*&% about Nikon lenses and not really
much more about Pentax lenses), but wasn't that "then" and now is, well
"now"? Isn't it possible that Nikon lenses have changed over the years?
