I am not sure if this has been already answered, but VueScan supports tons of scanners under Linux and OSX, including Firewire NikonScan 4000ED.
OTOH, the last time I checked, XSane was a joke (a year ago). Picture Window Pro supposedly supports 16 bit editing on anything (where anything == Win32 AND Linux at least) much better than photoshop at a fraction of the price. Never tried it though.
