Well, I currently own both the superior A* 85/1.4 and the very good FA*
85/1.4 (as well as the K 85/1.8), so I am not uneducated about the various
Pentax 85mm lenses. (See http://www.cetussoft.com/pentax/85compar/ for my
comparison of seven different Pentax 85mm lens models, including the two in
question here.)
No, the A* and the FA* 85/1.4's do not have the same formulas. My personal
feeling is that the A* lens is optimized for higher resolution and good
bokeh, while the FA* lens is optimized for autofocusing ease and unusual
bokeh. The FA* lens is ~not~ better simply because it has a different (or
newer) optical formula.
