Paul - I don't know anything about the long lens, and not much more about the short zoom, but I'll tell you anyway. I've recently bought a SMC A 24-50/4 lens that's optically identical to the F autofocus version. Haven't had the time to develop the first negatives, but from what I've noticed just by shooting with it - don't be surprised 'cause the lens flares like hell. It was the first time I had problems with it on any SMC lens. OTOH, I like to use flare creatively and sometimes get very frustrated with my inability to cause it with my primes :-) My 2 cents.
