Tom, as long as you have the lenses for it, I would go for an MZ-S. You don't need to buy AF lenses for it, the old ones will work fine but with the bonus of focus confirmation (if you like - you can always turn it off). My feeling is that the _only_ potential weakness of modern electronic cameras such as the MZ-S is exactly that - the electronics: they either go or they're shot, and repairs are most often replacements and expensive. The build quality and toughness levels are very high, as those of us who've dropped them can testify!
You can always acquire new or second-hand AF lenses as required: I find that I use AF a lot, but by no means all, of the time. There are some subjects for which it just won't do. I really would not go for yet another 20-year old camera as a main system, the age of the mechanics in them, and the unknown usage by previous owner(s) is a potential problem. As for digital, I personally feel no compulsion to rush in to it just yet - I may or may not buy a Pentax DSLR any time soon, as I am sure that my only use for digital is snapshot-sharing, at least for some time to come, and I may well prefer to go the Optio-* route for that. I wonder why we have so many people on this list with perfectly good film systems wailing and moaning about an entry level system in the *-ist bodies which no-one is forcing them to buy! On the other hand, if you feel you want to make the transition to digital now, surely you should look at the style of photographs you take, then select a system that gives you the opportunity to do that style with confidence in the support the camera system will provide you with? Brand then is not important, but whatever you choose must be comfortable to use, not frustrate you in interface or handling, and be of good enough quality in it's results not to make you yearn for, or go back to, shooting with the MX's.
