Actually I have read this patent :-) But it seems strange that they haven't
implemented USM in their lenses/bodies yet. I wonder if *ist D would be able
to use such a lenses in the future? According to this patent no, because it
doesn't have powerzoom contact neccessary to drive in-lens motor. but maybe
they have found another way to transmit power to the lens. Time will tell...
AF is no faster with USM than with coreless DC motor, but sometimes
possibility to have FTM (full time manual) would be useful and quietness is
important factor for many people.
