I think know the answer to this yourself, John, but...:-) Basically, a hardware firewall implies that you have the firewall software running on a different piece of hardware than your normal PC. Software firewalls are intended to run on your normal PC.
The "other" piece of hardware may of course be any kind of box able to run the software; routers, dedicated computers, Wireless access points... It's a bad choice of terms for distiguishing between them, though...
