Doesn't have to be a dedicated computer.  One simple hardware firewall
setup for home use is to buy a router if you have high speed access.
Almost all, as far as I know, include a hardware firewall.  And some like
D-Link router can also be hooked up to an external modem for dial-up
access.  And of course, you get the added benefit of a network setup and
shared internet access.
