It could be done if Pentax have a good plan. However, given that the *ist-D is more $$ than the Canon 10D ($1700 vs $1500), Pentax are getting off on the wrong foot. Plus Pentax really need to upgrade their lens line ASAP (with IS & USM). Right now the *ist-D is a D100/10D clone. It's just smaller that's all. Big deal.
REPLY: DSLR's have indeed opened a new playing field and Pentax (and anyone else) will take marketshare from Nikon and Canon simply because these two manufactureres have essentially been alone in this market. If Pentax only sell one *istD, they will have gained marketshare. The only thing that matters is for Pentax to get stores to stock the *istD. This could be the main battle. The Nikon/Canon crap is really not that important as the vast majority of buyers for the *istD, or any other comparable DSLR, comes from P&S, mostly digital ones, and don't really give damned about name tags on the front. If they can handle the *istD, then it has a good chance. Furthermore, I suspect that the number of years when PJ's choice of cameras are seen as guiding lights are numbered. After all, whats the value for a consumer who wants megapixels knowing that PJ's want low resolution images they can send fast to their newspapers? It is true that Pentax needs to ugrade their lens line-up, but it won't be of paramount importance for selling the likes of the *ist's. Pl
