If you had anything vital on those drives, there are companies that specialize in data recovery from such. They typically advertise in the classified section of pc mags. Although they can't usually get everything off, they can recover a lot. Not cheap, though.
At this point, it does not seem to be worth it - though I'm hanging onto the drives in case it should come to that.
One of my backup CDR's proved faulty yesterday, so relying on a single copy of data on CDR's does not seem like a good idea for backups.
The backup strategies discussed have been useful - I have enough stuff here to almost build another PC, so I may finish that off and network the two machines. Or just go with a USB-2 drive caddy and set up another hard drive for backups...
It seems obvious that I have to do something more...
