I just took a look at the images I captured with a N1kon D100 over the three days of the CART Brands Hatch weekend. This camera uses the same sensor as the *ist-D, so it's the best estimator I have for the file sizes from the Pentax. Over the three days I shot just over one thousand images (at the best quality jpeg setting the camera allows). This fills up about 2.4GB of my hard drive, so each image is around 2.4MB. The images were spread out over three days, with race day itself being the busiest day. I didn't quite end up going over 1GB for that day, but it was close; I finished the day with 950MB of images. At 2.4MB for each image, approximately 106 images should fit on a 256MB card, based on two rather big assumptions: one, that the compression software in the *ist-D produces similar compression ratios to that in the D-100, and two, that your images compress about as much as mine do. I believe that the Nikon camera estimated around 370 images would fit on an empty 1GB card, while I ended up getting just over 400.
