I, too, have an aversion to being forced to do things, like accept HTML
mail when plain text is perfectly adequate ;-) but in this case I would
say that Flash is pretty much a standard plug-in to have, and is used by
many websites to display animations and effects.

Flash originates from Macromedia and the current version (for Macs at
least) is 7 for OS X and can be downloaded from:

<http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/
download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P5_Language=English>

It simply installs a plug-in into the plug-ins folder in your web
browsers. If you use Internet Explorer, then I can assure you that you
have much more junk from MS installed in every crazy little nook and
cranny already ! Flash is not some monsterware ready to take over your
system...
