Well, thanks to Graywolf's suggestion, I got a Belkin powered hub and that seems to have fixed the problem. I removed then reinstalled the Memorex software and now I can access the flash card reader. It still shows as a removable drive rather than the little Memorex icon that is supposed to show up, but no matter, it works.
I still can't access the pictures directly from the Canon Powershot, but I will continue to work on it. I really want to use the flash card reader anyway, so I may not worry about it. :-) So... yip! It works! Yip! Yip! Hans, won't need those Windows ME files after all. Thanks for offering, though! It seems when using a lot of USB devices unplugging and replugging them in was just confusing the puter. Lots of USBs to keep track of, so the hub is better. Also it boots better. I was having to unplug before rebooting 1/2 of the time, so basically I guess it *was* getting confoosed -- that just proved it.
