MAC's, and a lot of pre-press software uses a gamma setting of 1.8, the internet standard and most other computers including Windows systems use a gamma setting of 2.2 (darker). If your graphics card is at all sophisticated you can go into its setting software and change that willy-nilly to either, or anything you might want such as 2.0 which would be a compromise between the too.
You should be aware that most folks have not calibrated their system, and thus have no idea what the photo they are viewing may actually look like no matter how carefully the person who produced it was to insure it was correctly calibrated for the media involved.
