Reducing the shadow on the face would require dodging, same as one does in PhotoShop for color or, for that matter, in color printing. Burning in would make it darker still. That being said I prefer the shadow as is. It helps establish the mood. The angular light is part of the composition in this case. The world is made up of highlights and shadow. Everything can't be flat.

I'd probably like it better though, if there was a tinge less shadow on the
right guy's face. Burning in, is that what it's called? I don't know, I am B&W
clueless.
