Hello Shel, While I certainly understand what you are saying, I would have to say that your terminology is different than most. I think a portait is what you would call a "flattering, nicely lit picture of someone."
Something that goes deeper might be more akin to a "study" or some such. Most of the buying public in the US would walk into a studio - Mall or not - to get a Portrait done - and it would not be what you are calling a portrait. Most of the advertising in the yellow pages for Portrait photography would not be what you are describing.
