That one was shot wide open at 2.8 - shutter speed wasn't the problem.
Probably shooting from further away (longer focal length) would have
done the trick.  It was a rather opportunistic shot that I had to
quickly react to catch the moment.

I do agree that controlling the DOF on the *istD isn't usually much of
a problem - wide apertures and longer focal lengths are the ticket.
