I think someone mentioned this, but the JPG images from the *istD and
many other cameras contain EXIF data that may take quite some space.

You need to REMOVE that to create a minimum-size JPG file.

IIRC, "save for web" in Photoshop removes the info, while a regular "save as"
or somply "save" does preserve it ...

As long as you can still find camera and exposure info with 
an image-viewer, the JPG image is larger than needed.
