Then, as I shot, I moved the camera in a slight circlular movement to blur the bokeh even further and to give the feel of movement.
That's given me a fantastic idea: a tripod mount that rotates about a point in front of the lens, the distance of which from the lens is variable. It would make it very easy to do what I think you're describing. Which is a very cool effect indeed.
