Its quite simple. Really. You are being a bit obtuse I think. When people say "x lens becomes y lens on a digital camera" - all they are really saying is that, due to the crop with the smaller sensor size on most digital cameras, the angle of view of xmm lens (on a digital camera) becomes that of ymm lens (on a 35mm camera). It is also referred to as a digital equivalent.
I suggest you get over the word and concentrate on its accepted meaning. Focal lengh per se is not relevant, but its associated AOV is. Anyway, the real point of this all is that APS sized sensors suck (IMO), sure you can get the AOV of an 85mm lens (on a 35mm camera) using a 50mm lens on an APS digital camera, but you still have the magnificaiton of the 50mm lens - threby eliminated one of the benefits of the 85mm lens. I realise that this is a compromise many will not have a problem with, but for me it is yet another reason to wish for the day when FF DSLR becomes affordable.
